Cepung Waterfall

 Tukad Cepung Waterfall

Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of Bali’s most unique and "Instagrammable" natural wonders. Unlike most waterfalls that are open to the sky, Tukad Cepung is hidden inside a cavern, creating a magical atmosphere as sunlight beams through the canyon crevices.

Here is a detailed guide to experiencing this sun-drenched sanctuary in Bangli.

Introduction: The Hidden Sunbeam of Bangli

Tukad Cepung Waterfall is a "hidden gem" located in the Tembuku region. It is famous for its cavernous setting, where the water flows down a circular cliff face rather than into a river or lake. When the sun is at the right angle (usually mid-morning), the light hits the mist of the waterfall, creating ethereal "God rays" that illuminate the entire cave in a golden glow.

Highlights of Tukad Cepung

  • The Cave Cathedral: The waterfall is framed by towering rock walls that resemble the high ceilings of a natural cathedral.

  • The Light Show: Famous for the dramatic sunbeams that pierce through the jungle canopy above the canyon.

  • The Jungle Trek: A scenic descent involving lush greenery, mossy cliffs, and a shallow river walk.

  • Eco-Preservation: The local community manages the site, ensuring the natural rock formations and water quality remain pristine.

How to Enter as a Tourist

  1. Arrival: The waterfall is located about 30 minutes from Ubud or 15 minutes from Pengelipuran Village.

  2. Ticketing: Purchase your entrance ticket at the small wooden booth near the parking lot.

    • Estimated Price: IDR 15,000 – 20,000 (prices are subject to minor changes).

  3. The Descent: You will need to hike down a flight of concrete stairs for about 15 minutes. The path is well-maintained but can be steep.

  4. The River Walk: Once at the bottom, you must walk through knee-deep water and navigate around large boulders to reach the "inner sanctum" where the waterfall is located.

What to Do

  • Chase the Light: Aim to arrive between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. This is the "golden window" when the sun is high enough to shine directly into the cave.

  • Cave Photography: Stand on the large rock in front of the falls for the iconic silhouette shot amidst the sunbeams.

  • Cool Off: Stand under the gentle flow of the falls. The water is cool and refreshing, perfect after the humid hike down.

  • Explore the Canyon: Don't just stop at the main falls; walk further along the canyon walls to see the smaller water trickles and unique rock textures.

The Do’s and Don’ts

Do'sDon'ts
Wear water shoes or sandals. The riverbed is rocky and slippery; flip-flops may float away.Don't bring heavy luggage. The stairs are steep and the space inside the cave is limited.
Bring a waterproof bag. The mist inside the cave is heavy and can get your camera/phone wet.Don't litter. This is a sacred natural site; take all your trash back up with you.
Wear your swimsuit underneath. There are limited changing facilities at the bottom; it's better to be prepared.Don't ignore the weather. If it is raining heavily, avoid the cave as flash floods can occur in narrow canyons.
Be patient. This is a popular spot; you may need to wait in a short "queue" to get the perfect photo on the main rock.Don't climb the cliffs. The rocks are mossy and very slippery.
