The creation of the Bali Bird Park is a remarkable story of passion, environmental preservation, and transforming flat, empty farmland into an intricate, self-sustaining tropical ecosystem.
The Vision and Foundation (Early 1990s)
Before the park’s inception, Bali’s tourism was heavily heavily focused on sandy beaches and traditional village arts. The island lacked a dedicated, world-class center for ecological education and species preservation.
The park was envisioned and developed by a dedicated group of international and local conservationists, spearheaded by nature enthusiasts who wanted to create a sanctuary to combat the declining populations of Indonesia’s rare endemic birds due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trading.
The developers chose a flat, barren plot of agricultural land in the Gianyar regency. Rather than simply building cages, they spent nearly three years meticulously importing and planting over 2,000 species of tropical plants, palms, and trees to organically recreate the natural rainforest canopies of Indonesia, Africa, and South America.
