The creation of the Bali Safari & Marine Park is a milestone achievement in Asian wildlife conservation, marking the transformation of dry, low-yielding agricultural coastal land into a flourishing, multi-habitat eco-sanctuary.

The Corporate Vision & DNA (Early 2000s)

The park was conceptualized and developed by Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI), a world-renowned conservation organization with decades of wildlife management experience. TSI wanted to build a flagship international destination in Bali that could serve as a living gene bank for endangered Indonesian and global fauna, while simultaneously creating a massive educational attraction for the millions of global tourists visiting the island.

The developers purposely selected a vast, coastal-inland corridor in Gianyar. The area was heavily landscaped to recreate three distinct geographical zones: Indonesia (Sumatra and Kalimantan), India, and the African Savannah. Millions of trees and native grasses were planted to ensure the soil could support natural browsing and grazing behaviors for massive herds.

The Grand Launch (2007)

The park officially opened its doors to the world in October 2007 under the name Bali Safari & Marine Park. The name was strategically selected to showcase its dual focus: a land-based safari adventure combined with a highly advanced marine sector featuring a freshwater aquarium network designed to educate the public on fragile aquatic ecosystems.

Major Milestone: Saving the Critical Megafauna

A defining chapter in the park's history is its intensive involvement in the Sumatran Elephant and Sumatran Tiger Conservation Programs. With wild habitats in Sumatra rapidly shrinking due to palm oil deforestation, Bali Safari & Marine Park became an official government-appointed breeding center.

The park successfully built a state-of-the-art elephant hospital, launched breeding programs that have welcomed multiple healthy calves, and created the "Elephant Conservation Center" to educate the public on human-wildlife conflict mitigation.

Furthermore, the park built the Bali Agung Theater, a mega-stage indoor theater seating 1,200 people. Since its launch, it has hosted spectacular cultural performances blending hundreds of Balinese dancers with live safari animals on stage, creating an unprecedented intersection of Balinese folklore and wildlife preservation.

The park’s massive footprint is organized into highly interactive, educational zones:

  • The Safari Journey: The park’s signature experience. Visitors board air-conditioned, heavy-duty safari trams with large glass viewing panels. The trams drive through water features and open plains, allowing animals like lions, tigers, and zebras to walk right alongside the vehicles.

  • The Fresh Water Aquarium: A specialized indoor marine pavilion housing thousands of fish species from around the globe, featuring a dedicated piranha feeding zone and a walk-through underwater tunnel.

  • Harimau (Tiger) From Predator to Prey Show: A compelling educational presentation inside a custom-built amphitheater that highlights the sharp senses, agility, and critical endangerment of the Sumatran Tiger.

  • Night Safari: An exhilarating evening adventure where guests enter the dark habitats inside a secure steel-caged truck to hand-feed tigers and herbivores under the stars.

4. Premium Facilities Provided

As a premier international resort destination, the park features world-class infrastructure and guest amenities:

  • Mara River Safari Lodge: A stunning, African-themed luxury resort located directly inside the park. Guests can sleep in thatched-roof bungalows and watch rhinos, zebras, and giraffes grazing right from their private balconies.

  • Tsavo Lion Restaurant: Asia’s very first full-service fine dining restaurant located directly adjacent to the lion habitat, separated only by full-length, heavy-duty glass panels.

  • Water Play Zone & Fun Zone: An expansive recreational amusement park featuring exciting waterslides, splash pools, and mechanical family rides—perfect for cooling off after a long day in the sun.

  • Full Accessibility & Shuttle Network: The entire park is designed with wide, smoothly paved pathways that are completely stroller and wheelchair-friendly. A continuous loop of open-air shuttle buses carries guests between different zones effortlessly.

  • Sustainable Eco-Tourism Practices: Operating with a strong local focus, the park actively minimizes single-use plastics across all dining kiosks, utilizes eco-friendly composting for animal waste, and prioritizes sustainable operations to protect Bali's natural resources.
